Citizenship

Applying for citizenship, and what to do if the file is delayed or a letter arrives.

Overview

Permanent residents who meet the requirements can apply for Canadian citizenship. The application checks how long you have lived in Canada, your language ability, your tax filings, where those apply, and that nothing else stands in the way.

Most of our time on citizenship files goes into the details: counting days of physical presence accurately, completing the forms and listing absences. If a procedural fairness letter arrives, we help you read it and answer it properly. If a file is delayed, we review where it stands and explain your options.

Who this suits

  • Permanent residents getting ready to apply
  • People who are unsure how to count their time in Canada
  • Applicants with long trips outside Canada
  • People who have received a procedural fairness letter
  • Applicants whose file has waited longer than expected

What to prepare

  • Your PR card and every passport you have used
  • A record of every trip outside Canada
  • Language test results or proof of education, as needed
  • Records of tax filings, where they apply
  • Addresses where you have lived, with dates
  • Any letter or message about your file

How it works

  1. Your history

We hear your history and explain what the application will test.

  2. Count and check

We go through your dates and trips together so the numbers are right.

  3. Application

We prepare it with you, and you review every page.

  4. Follow-up

We look out for letters and requests and help you reply before the deadline.

Common questions

The main test is time spent in Canada, together with language ability and, where it applies, tax filings. We go through the dates with you and say whether you appear to meet them.

Read it carefully and note the deadline. The letter explains the concern and gives you a chance to respond. We help you prepare a clear reply with the right documents.

Files move at different speeds. We review where yours stands and explain your options before you decide what to do next.

No consultant can promise an outcome. Final decisions on applications are made by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
